Battlegroups
A Battlegroup is, in effect, your 'army' for a particular game session. The battlegroup can be either selected from the Army Lists as given in the Cold War Commander rules and be limited by scenario conditions and points limits, or it can be an historical formation without such limits.
Fortunately I have a substantial library of Vietnam material and intend to play my games based upon historical and recorded accounts.
Also, unlike in WW2, units operated in Vietnam in reasonably well-established TO&Es. From the American and Allied perspective these are well documented although this is not the case for the VC and the North Vietnamese Army.
Most researchers in this field accept that the NVA was organised in a standard way like most other Western armies, with Divisions, Battalions, Companys and Platoons organised similar to the Allies.
Things are more complicated with the VC since they had different types of fighting forces from the peasant militia (local forces) through to Main Force units. Also, since they were a guerrilla army numbers of personnel available were always changing. In some senses this is very useful since it means you can field reasonably ad-hoc formations.
My battlegroups are generally based on real formations and are not points-limited. For instance, US infantry operated in the field as battalion sized units even if at the tactical level it was the platoon or the company that was maneuvering in the field, they always opearted as part of a battalion-sized force with other assets available.
