VC Infantry & Command Counter Set

The inclusion of a Company Combat Support Platoon in the organisation of the Company involved quite a lot of work in producing the extra weapons counters. I personally designed the 57mm Recoiless Rifle image since I could not find anything suitable that I could use in its place.

Each counter is produced in Adobe Photoshop using layers (see Photoshop Layers). After saving each counter as a single image I now had the counter set to represent my Vietcong Infantry Company.

Note that many of the images are duplicated; their are nine infantry stands for instance. Using VASSAL you can drag-and-drop the same image onto the mapboard over and over again so only a single image of the counter has to be produced.

Top Downs

I decided to use top-down views of my counters since they are more representative of a CWC game than using traditional square counters that are used in games such as Squad Leader.

Each element of the top-down views, whether it be a figure or a weapon, a piece of terrain or a vehicle, has to be individually drawn and coloured and then saved as an image file. This involves a lot of work so that producing the counter sets has taken several weeks.

Fortunately, a fabulous site called Junior General, has a lot of figure poses that can be used which only required me to re-colour them for Vietnam. In this regard I would like to give particular thanks must to Dirk Schoenberger whose figure designs I used to create many of my images and whose permission was granted for their use.

Adapting the AA-HMG

Since, I could not find anything suitable to represent the AA-HMG I was forced to find a solution by adapting a German WW2 SdKfz 10/4, in which case I had to extract the weapon from the mount pixel-by-pixel.

This kind of adaption is time consuming but very satisfying if you get the result that you were looking for. In fact, it's much like painting figures.
